POEMS

What is a Dad?

He's someone who's taught you
to follow your dreams
and try to be all you can be.
He's someone who listens to
your point of view
(though sometimes he may disagree).
He's someone who loves you
no matter what happens
and sees you through
good times and bad.
He's someone who's there for you
time after time -
He's your mentor and friend...
He's your Dad

DADDY'S HANDS
"Walk a little slower, Daddy"
Said a little child so small.
"I'm following in your footsteps,
And I don't want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast,
Sometimes they're hard to see;
So walk a little slower, Daddy,
For you are leading me.

Someday when I'm all grown up,
You're what I want to be;
Then I will have a little child
Who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,
And know that I was true;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy,
For I must follow you."

A Brief History of Fathers Day

Legend has it that the first Fathers Day celebration was observed in Washington state. In 1909, Louise Smart Dodd, the daughter of Civil War veteran William Smart, proposed a day to honor fathers around the country. Her inspiration was her own father who alone had raised his 6 children after his wife died during childbirth. By 1916 the idea had spread across the country, and was even promoted by president Woodrow Wilson.

It wasn't until 1966 that president Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of every June, the official Fathers Day. Today, Fathers Day is celebrated in a number of countries around the world.
