Book Review by Alva Anderson aka GnomeNut from Florida, USA

I discovered 2 books that every Gnome collector will enjoy. (They’re hard-cover, 8 ½ x 11.) The illustrations are positively magical. Both are by Erik Forsman (Scandinavian illustrator), published by Derrydale Books, and distributed by Crown Publishers, Inc. (1986/New York).

As Christmas time approaches, it’s especially important to highlight Gnomes and their uniqueness that adds an extra measure of magic for all of us who hold them dear. Their precious faces brighten our homes throughout the year … at Christmas, however, Gnomes bring an added glow of warmth, comfort and security so needed in our troubled world. (If you think you hear voices on Christmas Eve, it’s probably the Gnomes in celebration around a tree.)

Each gift is carefully wrapped before he goes to a Gnome Council meeting. Barn Gnomes, House Gnomes, Forest Gnomes, Woodshed Gnomes, Stable Gnomes, and Mountain Gnomes all attend. Dressed in his warmest clothing, Arn sets out for the Council’s" Christmas Eve meeting. The Gnome King keeps an accurate list of children, but this year there is a new little boy whose address is unknown. His name is Bobby. It’s Arn’s job to find Bobby. – but Arn is so shy. (Gnomes rarely talk to humans, and Arn quickly realizes he might have to resort to that!) Arn sets out on his Christmas Eve journey to deliver presents. When a few deer appear and offer to help, Arn learns that Bobby’s house is on the other side of the valley. Arn is concerned about covering that distance before the sun rises. Lo and behold, along comes a man and his wife in a sleigh! Arn steps out bravely and asks if they know of a new little boy named "Bobby." Yes, they do -- and are on their way to Bobby’s house! Arn is invited to hop into the sleigh to speed his journey. Bobby is staring out the window when he hears the sleigh’s bells. (When he had awakened and discovered that the Gnome hadn’t yet come, his brother told him there was no such thing as a Gnome. Bobby knew that wasn’t true.) Arn quickly hops out of the sleigh, knocks on the door, and hands the special gift to a very excited Bobby. The little boy thanks Arn, politely bows, and they shake hands. It was time for Arn to quickly disappear into the snowy forest. He knew the Gnome King would be proud of him. Finding Bobby makes this Arn’s happiest Christmas ever.
