Here is a note from our new member, Zsuzska:

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I noticed some Hungarian names among the members.  Is that a coincindence or is it quite natural for so many of us Hungarians being interested in gnomes?

I'm glad to be a member.  I have gnomes on my mailbox, in my garden and since my very serious hobby is photography (I have had several shows and am considered a semi-professional) I have made a picture called, Gnome School, for an international photo contest entitled, "What is Knowledge?"  I have written gnome and fairy stories since the age of 6, back in Hungary.  I have quite a few of the gnome figurines and was quite disappointed when the ONE store that carried them here in Raleigh closed.

Best regards,
Zsuzska

April Craft:

Gnome Face Painting

Whether painting a front view or a side view the basic steps are the same. Colors noted are just suggestions feel free to create a gnome of your own using color variations.

1. Transfer the basic outline and base coat them.

Beard: Slate Grey     Face, Lips & Ears:  Medium Flesh

2. Reapply the pattern with detail at this time (eyes, nose, cheek lines and wrinkles).

3. Float a little Slate Grey above his eyes. The eye sockets are painted with Snow White. Then you will float Cinnamon between the eyes, underneath the edge of his hat, at the base of the ears, on the base of the cheeks, on the middle of the nose. Then use Cadmium Red floats for his cheeks, on the tips of his ears and on the ball of his nose. All facial linework is completed with Raw Sienna. The eyelashes and pupils are Ebony Black. There is a stroke of Olive Green around each pupil for the iris. There is also a dot of Snow White highlight in each eye.

4. Beard, mustache and hair:  Begin by floating Raw Umber in the darker areas underneath his nose, where it comes out from underneath his cap and on his eyebrows. Come back with the comb or rake brush and pull in curls, and then use a round brush for the fly-a-way hairs.

TIPS:

1. To give eyes more sparkle use a high gloss sealer on them and seal the rest with a satin finish.

2. To make a gnome look to the left or the right simply place the black pupils both to the left side of the iris or to the right side. Place the small which dot to the same side - left or right.

3. The iris should disappear into the upper eyelid forming a three quarter moon shape. If you paint a complete round full moon shape your gnome will have a wide-eyed, startled look!

4. To quickly add lovely waves to beards and hair use a comb or rake brush designed especially for this purpose.
