Gnome Kidnappers at it
again...
A friend told me yesterday that there had been
a program on TV relating to a supposedly true incident - Garden Gnomes
were stolen from a yard, and shortly thereafter they appeared back at a
baseball diamond, in the formation of a ball game. She did not remember
the channel nor the day. G22 Doreda - NOTE: The August 18, 2001 edition
of the Saturday Sun (Toronto Edition) ran this story (title: Gnome Alone)
and this happened in Newark, N.Y.
And here is another report...the
gnome liberation front has been working in the Missoula, Montana area.
Seems as tho several times this summer they have struck at various yards
throughout the town and liberated some of the gnomes. They say the front
was contacted by the gnomes, as they needed a 60 day vacation from their
current duties of watching over peoples yards. Notes were left explaining
this to the owners, but they were not ransom notes!! Anyway, it seems
when school faculty arrived at one of the schools yesterday morning, all
the gnomes were there, tendererly placed in the school gardens between
trees and flower beds. Just thought you mite get a tickle out of the
story!!! G68 Dagmar
And yet another!!!
MeMe gnome has a complete set of outdoor concrete garden gnomes. They go
together to make up an outdoor chess set. She displays it at her summer
trailer in northern Ontario. Someone ran off with two of her pawns! Well,
MeMe hopefully the twins will remain together and maybe they will be
returned!
Here is a picture of the set from MeMe before
the twins went missing.
HOW ABOUT THIS ONE!
(From the Edmonton, Sun, September 19,
2001)
AND HE'S NOT TELLING: When Gnorman the garden
gnome went missing in July, owner Myra Plantz figured the little guy was
the victim of vandals and gone for good. But the garden ornament returned
to its Cambridge, Ont, [Canada], owner last weekend, with a new coat of
paint and photos from a trip to Cuba. No one's owned up to the prank that
included letters and postcards from the travelling lawn ornament. "I never
thought they'd come back, never dreamt this until I got the first letter,"
Plantz said. The letter said Gnorman, who never had a name before, was
going to his "gnephew's gnuptials," and on a trip to somewhere warm. The
Plantzes then got a postcard: Gnorman was having fun on his travels, had
met up with an old friend, and they were headed to Cuba. When good-timin'
Gnorman reappeared, he had a red bag with him containing a garter belt,
sand and seashells. He also had a photo album, one final letter, and a
buddy. Gnewman, a gnome the Plantzes had never seen before, was there. The
newcomer's the ideal house guest; no noise, no wet towels on the floor,
and no mess left behind in the kitchen.
Big New Project - we
need some volunteers...
Have you read any of the club story, On the
way to Boubliwae? I am creating a gigantic fence mural based on our Boubliwae
story.
I have patterns for wood cut outs of
gnomes, fae, trolls (These trolls are nicely done and will behave
themselves when they arrive in Boubliwae when Cerridwen sprinkles them
with fae dust!), dragonflies and bees! Also, I have some wonderful ceramic
"Star of David" shaped stars (these are the ones with the long bottom
tails) to hang in the sky. If you would like to paint one of these cut
outs or a star for the mural E-mail me telling me what you want to paint
(gnome, fae etc.) at QueenGnome@foundus.com .
Please remember to include your member number and delivery address. All
those contributing to the mural - sign your piece so that your name will
be included in the credits!
With the help of a fae member Cerridwen, who
is now also a NEW gnome member, we are going to do a short story to go
with the mural. Once the project is complete I will photograph it. We want
the picture and story submitted to as many newspapers and magazines as
possible. I will create an electronic copy and ask ALL members to help by
submitting it to their local publishers. Let's work together on this
project. If you have not been following the Boubliwae story you can read
it at the following link [you will need to enter your password]

(G134) travels to Port Stanley in Antartica...
One of the yards featured a remarkably ornate
collection of ceramic garden gnomes. The yard was tiered. The lowest tier
of the garden was occupied by dozens of garden gnomes. There was a ceramic
Mexican burro and a pair of plastic, pink flamingoes behind them. Farther
up, there were a couple of species of ceramic geese. A large shrub in the
highest tier was surrounded by a collection of ceramic Gentoo Penguins and
topped by a ceramic hawk.
BOOK REVIEW
These books were a favorite of Wil Huygen and
much of what is in the original book "Gnomes" is related to these stories.
There is a second book that is a continuation of this one and it is called
the Further Adventures of Nils. Highly recommend reading both of these
books. You will learn a lot about Sweden while reading entertaining
literature.
Both books written by Selma Lagerlof who was
the first woman to win the nobel prize for her works.
These books were first published in 1907. They
have been translated into more than 30 languages and read by children in
more than 35 countries. One German edition alone sold over seven million
copies!
Book One (The Adventures of Nils) begins the tale of a naughty boy who is changed into a tomten, caught on the back of a big, white goosey-gander and catapulted into the sky with a flock of wild geese, and enters a magical kingdom of well-educated, talking animals. With folklore, pure original fantasy and a profound understanding of history and geography of Sweden, the first book spans the area from West Vemminghog Township, down in Southern Skane, to the great Ostergotland plain.
Each book is enchanting in itself. Together, they are a remarkable saga of how a boy earns the trust and admiration of all who know him. It's a two-volume treasury of adventure and learning for the entire family.
Ask for them at your local library.
