How to create a gnome smile with your computer? <:-)

Here is a beautiful poem from new member Frodo G159:

Message of the Leprechauns:

The love in your heart wasn't put there to stay,

Love isn't love until you give it away.

Movie Night with the Gnomes:

In the movie "Gnomes" pictured to the left, wherein Lisa marries Thor, rubbing noses represents a way of greeting. Lisa comes from the City and introduces Thor, who is a forest gnome, to lip kissing...Thor likes it very much. Terrible trolls try to ruin the wedding, but are out-smarted by the gnomes and the forest animals.

Although this movie is no longer sold new you can sometimes find previously viewed copies for sale on the www.ebay.com auction site.

Amilie - I went to see this French movie on Saturday, February 23, 2002 and I thought it to be exceptionally entertaining. It was a normal two hour movie, but it felt like it was over in thirty minutes!

Here is a link to a site where you can read more about this movie and see some additional pictures from Marafae

Want to purchase a very similar gnome? Check out the new Gare Gnome molds (#3878 & #3880). Ask at your local ceramic shops for a bisque piece and paint it yourself - or with a special person. Create a wonderful family memory gnome.

What is the relationship between Gnomes, Goats and Pigs?

You often see them pictured together especially in relation to European folklore. So what is the relevance? This is what we have discovered.

Gnomes & Goats

Sweden:  Before Gnomes (or Tomten the plural for a single Tomte) came on the scene in Sweden (many, many years ago, naturally), it was goats who delivered presents.  The little Gnomes teamed up with them and are fast friends, especially since goats are playful and co-operative and looked after by Gnomes, too.  Gnomes are extremely popular in Sweden. So perhaps this is the actual connection; they like gnome folklore and goats are a commodity and of course both are gentle creatures. We know the goats came to Sweden first, to deliver packages at Christmas (and really to major part of Norway, etc.).  The Gnomes (Tomten) came along a while later, they realized the goats needed help -- and stayed to help and spread more holiday cheer.  Naturally, they livened things up a lot.  The goats were already lively and happy, like Gnomes -- so when the Gnomes started pitching in ... well, the rest is history.  They struck up a lasting arrangement with goats that brought merriment to young and
old alike.

Information direct from a lady of Swedish decent who runs a goat ranch Yvonne Blosser, ...Goats are big in Sweden with the most popular Swedish breeds of goats being alpines, saanens and toggenburgs. Yvonne owns a herd of registered goats (over 40) and her herd name is "Gnomes Hollow". Yvonne is an avid collector of both gnomes and goats memorabilia. The Gnomes Hollow herd emblem shows a gnome milking a goat, with the gnome circling one arm around one side of the teat and standing on the edge of a milk stool to do so.....any info you would care to share on gnomes etc. would always be welcome..and I can always supply a lot of info on goats.

Gnomes & Pigs

Denmark:  It appears that the pig is often pictured with gnomes in Danish folklore, because pork is so ingrained in their diet.
Sweden:  On the pigs, since a Gnome would never kill an animal, the pigs seen with a Gnome had to have died a natural death.  And those heads are many times for
decoration, too. In Sweden there is no humidity.  No moldy bread.  And long ago, when the famous Gnome pictures were done by Jenny Nystrom (20s to 40s), Sweden was colder and had a lot of snow that they don't have any more (except up near Lapland).  Meats, breads, fish, all sorts of foods, could be preserved easily in a cold cellar or barn.

Many times, the pig head was artificial on tables -- but Gnomes lived in houses in secret places (and some live in their own houses under trees, etc.).  There are house Gnomes, barn Gnomes -- lots of categories as we already know.

This postcard picture is from 1906!

I asked gnome member Stuerzi G83 who lives in Germany about gnomes and pigs. He has seen the famous gnome riding a pig but writes that he has never read about a special relationship between gnomes and pigs in any literature. But, writes that gnomes are often pictured with other animals (farm animals like dogs, cats and rabbits - and woodland animals like deer, rabbits, fish and turtles). More often gnomes carry tools like spades or rakes or vegetables (carrots or radishes). Not to mention...those gnomes who enjoy grapes and wine!

Here is a picture of Stuerzi's "gnome family" followed by a couple of gnomes from the wine section!

Artist Profile: Valerie sculpted this wonderful gnome and snail out for a stroll.

My name is simply, Valerie. I live in the United Sates and I am 31 years old. I am the mother of 3 beautiful children and I have been sculpting for over 10 years now with Polymer clays. I am self taught and never use molds for my one of a kind sculptures. I have always had a love of all art and a great desire to create my own. Over the years, I have sculpted almost every kind of fantasy creature there is, and I am always having new ideas for more. I have sold my sculptures to faerie/fantasy loving people all over the world now. I have sent them to numerous locations in the United States and now England and Sweden also. I work best when I have a bit of a challenge, so please send me your ideas and we will see what happens!

Patuljak (Gnome) Out for a very   s l o w   walk......... This wonderful Gnome was inspired by the fantastic illustrations of Rein Poortvliet. I have hand sculpted this one-of-a-kind piece using ProSculpt clay. It sits on a base of cedar wood and measures 15cm high from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. He has hand painted eyes. His hat and clothes are made from leathers and denim. The snail?s shell is real and his body is also hand sculpted and painted.

Be sure to sign her guest book before you leave to let her know what you think of her work!

April's Crafty Ideas:  Decorate sliding glass doors while keeping them securely closed with gnomes! Use one inch thick board to insert in the door track. Height can be as tall as you desire but length should match that of your door track. Seal it well, so that any condensation from the glass does not deteriorate the wood and ruin all your work. If you finish it on both sides you will be able to enjoy your gnomes both indoors and out! Your board can contain a family of gnomes or a gnome followed by some animals. Use your imagination and enjoy this project.

EARTH DAY

Hi all, I was hoping to start out with a good article and how better a way to start than talking about our beloved Earth, and April 22 we celebrate Earth Day. Here?s some ways you can help make it better.

Earth Day =  is a special day that reminds us to how to take care of our planet.

If we do not take care of ourselves, we do not grow up to be strong and healthy.  Well, the Earth can become an unhealthy place to live if we do not take care of it.

What You Can Do To Help Our Planet, Earth:

Turn off lights and other energy-using devices when not using them.

Use cold instead of hot water whenever possible.

Help improve the environment by providing a backyard habitat for birds or butterflies.  Plant trees and plants that will attract them to your yard.

Reuse materials in your home - plastic bags, jars, and shopping bags.

Recycle your old magazines or books by giving them to a friend, a nursing home, or a hospital.

Plant a tree!  Trees help clean the air of pollutants and provide safe homes for birds, owls, and squirrels. Visit the The Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org) to learn more about trees.

Do not litter - keep your part of the Earth clean!

Recycling Vocabulary Words :

Recyclable - can be collected and reused to make new products or package material.

Degradable - the product will break down and return to nature within a reasonably short time after it is disposed of properly.

Compostable - all materials in the product or package will break down down into, or otherwise become part of, usable compost in a safe and timely manner if processed correctly.
