Canadians, enjoy countless liberties. We live under a government of our choosing, participate in a variety of cultural and political events, and express our opinions freely and without persecution. For most of us, war is something seen primarily on the television or in movies. But our country wouldn't be what it is today without the more than 1.8 million Canadians who have served in wars and peacekeeping missions around the globe.

On November 11, we'll honour the men and women who have sacrificed for our freedom, from the Boer War to the attack on Vimy Ridge; the beaches of Normandy to the battle at Kapyong.

Now for our lesson in Astrology, I present Madam Gemini and her companion Poo

Poo consults Madam Gemini, whom she calls GiGi
Madam GiGi and Poo discuss Capricorn

Poo: Good morning GiGi, I would like to ask you about a Gnome Lady who is a member of the Woodland Folk.

GiGi: And just what would you like to know my little friend?

Poo: Well GiGi, I know she was born under the Capricorn star constellation and is ruled by the planet Saturn.

GiGi: Oh Poo, you have been doing your homework! I see you have researched your friend's astrological background. This is exceptional! It may help you to better understand her.

Poo: I know she tends the mountain goats; I believe this is because she was born under the sign of Capricorn which is the goat sign. Wanda, that's my Woodland friend's name, is a very patient, plodding, yet solid and substantial gnome. She often seems to be satisfied with things as they are, then when she gets an idea in her head, she just drives forward. It takes a lot to provoke her... but I am worried about her confidence.

GiGi: Those born under this sign often seem to lack self-confidence and can be very moody. They will seek solitude to think things over and solve their problems. You may find that Wanda will stick to her own opinion rather than your advice about personal matters such as her confidence.

Poo: GiGi, she is truly kind and self-sacrificing but gets morose over the loss of her be loved goats. It is hard for her to dispel clouds of gloom or thoughts of death whenever one of her goats disappears. And since gnomes, especially Capricorns who continue to be active up to an advanced age, outlive goats I worry about her. Is there anything I can do to help her, without it sounding like I am trying to give her advice?

GiGi: You can present her with gifts that would lift her spirits, even in solitude, such as art in its truest form from nature, or music! Speak with the Woodland Folk, I am sure they will be able to help you obtain gifts from nature. Wanda's ability to go on, plus her unwillingness to accept defeat enables her to renew her energy and lift her confidence; coupled with your gifts from nature I am sure will do wonders for her.

Poo: Thanks GiGi.

GiGi: You are welcome. But Poo, do not forget those born under the sign of Capricorn are ruled by the planet Saturn and so treasure their solitude. Even the name of this ringed planet comes from the word "saturnine" which means morose and gloomy. So it is actually part of Wanda's nature to enjoy solitude and appear somber. But from her solitude she will always reap reward by finding solutions to her problems. Just like planting seeds, Wanda grows with her ability to nourish her confidence with solitude and you can help by providing her with nourishing gifts.

Book The Christmas Tomten.gif (69291 bytes)

The Christmas Tomten by Viktor Rydberg, illustrated by the popular Swedish artist Harald Wiberg. From the inside of the jacket: "It is Christmas Eve. Little Vigg has been alone in the cottage all day because his foster mother has gone to the village to buy Christmas treats for him. Suddenly he hears the sound of bells. Outside is a sleigh, pulled by four tiny horses and driven by a little old man dressed in shaggy clothing. The Christmas Tomten has come to take Vigg on a wonderful journey. They visit farms, big houses and even the King's castle, and at each the Tomten leaves gifts for the people who live there, if they deserve them. Vigg wonders if he will get a present too, but when they reach the hall of the Mountain King, he learns that good deeds must be weighed against bad ones." This is a classic Swedish tale.

Hello Everybody,

This is to let you know that my Christmas Edition is now up at www.beryl-the-gnome.co.uk  or www.berylthegnome.co.uk  if you prefer the shorter URL. There are some pretty big graphics in this edition so some pages take a while to load. I hope you'll be patient and think that the wait was worthwhile when you eventually see what's in there.

Meanwhile, my very best wishes for the Christmas Season.

Happy Holidays !

More Paper Dolls - Vera Hecker

I was amazed at the interest in the gnome paper cut-out dolls, so I went in search of more information. Sadly, Charlotte Whatley, (the artist of the 2 gnome dolls recently featured) is no longer creating paper dolls; she has moved on to other endeavors. However, I have discovered another artist, Vera Hecker! Here is what she has written to me:

Background by Vera Hecker

I was born a very sickly child. I was a 3-month preemie with polio and other physical disabilities. As I grew I was very limited on what I could do physically. But, I was  blessed with the wonderful ability to draw. This ability kept me from being depressed. So many hours of my day were filled with drawing. And the subject I liked the best? You can guess it...gnomes, dragons, mermaids and fairies! They could be any color...any place...any shape...and friends.

I learned, when I went to school, that I wasn't the only one who loved all these little creatures.  Every kid I met...loved them as much as I did. I drew for myself and for everyone who asked for one. It always put people in  good moods. Like a magic spell of happiness!

I have never stopped drawing all these beautiful creatures. They have brought smiles to so many people in my life. Do you realize that children as young as 2 years old know what a mermaid is? It's wonderful. Children are very important to me.

If a child would write me requesting such a drawing I will design a special page to send them (over the net). Before I end this letter, I want you to know that I have shared your site with all the children I know. Good things should be shared! [This is her response to my request, asking her if she would design a gnome family.]

Visit Vera's web site and see some of her fae dolls, and her elf doll, which looks a lot like a wee gnome. The cost for the elf and all his wardrobe is $6.50 U.S. Funds including postage!

Gnome Health - Cholesterol???

Gnomes do not have any recorded records of gnomes with cholesterol problems in any of their secret books. Perhaps their diet of grains, fruits and nuts contribute to them not being plagued with cholesterol. Gnomes occasionally indulge in fish, but never eat meat which we humans know is a significant source of unhealthy fats in our diets. Have you ever put out a bowl of nuts and had them disappear? You may just have a gnome about the house!

Lady Lollypop's Contest

Only a very few persons sent poems......out of 700 + members, that's the pits folks!  I know there's  more talent out there!  Makes it easy for the ones sending in poems to win doesn't it!  One poem was rejected due to the fact it wasn't original, but a copy of someone else's. Another was a bit too scary for our child safe environment,  All contest poems must be original, we didn't mention that before and only assumed you'd know that, sorry our mistake. They must be positive not negative type poems, scary can't be printed in our club house.  Nor can profanity. And we can't repeat winners for at least 3 contests, so new people have a chance to win also. So with that in mind. Read the winners poem and enjoy.

The Winner will receive one of the Following

CONGRATULATION!!

Christmas Wreat

Materials

Green construction paper
Felt pen or pencil to trace hands
Glue
Glitter
Sequins
Ribbons
Other decorations for finishing

Directions: Trace child's open hand onto paper. (8-10 tracings for a small child) Cut out tracings. Glue tracings together at wrists with fingers pointed out. Decorate with glitter, sequins, ribbons. Write your name, age, and date made on back.

You'll Need:
6 inch wrapped Candy Cane
Ribbon
2 wiggle eyes
Red or Brown pom pom
2 pipe cleaners
Craft glue or glue gun

Leave the wrapping on the candy cane. Glue eyes on rounded face of the candy cane. Glue red pompom on the face for a nose. Tie ribbon into a bow on the straight part of the candy cane. Cut one of the pipe cleaners in half. Wrap the full pipe cleaner around the crook of the candy cane to begin the antlers. Use the cut pipe cleaners to manipulate into antlers.

You'll need:
Dry Pine Cones
Green Glitter
Glue
Sequins

Paint the pine cone with glue.  Before the glue dries, sprinkle with green glitter.
Top with a paper star. When it dries you can glue on sequins or tinsel. Stand on the base for a Mini- Christmas Tree or hang by adding a tie.
Tip: If you cannot find open pine cones. Place some in a 200 degree oven on a cookie sheet.  They will open as they dry.

Clothespin Reindeerpicture
Reindeer made out of clothespins are cute and quick!
This project is rated VERY EASY to do.
What You Need

  • 3 Clothespins
  • 7mm Wiggle eyes
  • Small red pom pom
  • Ribbon
  • White small pom pom
  • Tacky glue

How To Make It

  1. Use three clothespins: two pointing down (4 legs); the third pointing up (ears). Glue together.
  2. Add wiggle eyes, a small red pom-pom nose, a ribbon on the neck, and a pom-pom tail using tacky glue.

Tips

Tacky Glue is better for crafts than hot glue, which boys can easily get hurt using; it's thicker and tackier than Elmer's Glue and dries quickly.
