First International Gnome Day 2002 Update: Check out the information on this link to discover more information on the upcoming First International Gnome Day 2002. It explains more about the event and confirms that it is not to promote gnome thefts.

Old Gnome History ...

Conventional Gnomes
From Gjellerup's Den AEldre Eddas Gudesange.

The type of gnome most frequently seen is the brownie, or elf, a mischievous and grotesque little creature from twelve to eighteen inches high, usually dressed in green or russet brown. Most of them appear as very aged, often with long white beards, and their figures are inclined to rotundity. They can be seen scampering out of holes in the stumps of trees and sometimes they vanish by actually dissolving into the tree itself.

Commentary:  Whenever I envision a "brownie or elf" I picture them as being slight. quick and yes mischievous, but certainly nothing like the two pictured above. I could however think of them as being gnomes of great wisdom discussing some age old gnome secrets. They remind me of gnome philosophers. What do you think of these two gnomes?

Saw this in a tag that came attached to a Gnome candleholder. Cute ? GnomeNut G9

"Gnomes are a folklore that dates back hundreds of years (maybe even thousands). It is said they mainly live in forests (and rural areas) and work at night ? sometimes even visiting humans (but without ever being seen). They are very discreet. If you happen to see a Gnome, try to never tell a single person.

When Gnomes gather, they always sit in a circle. The reason for this is that when one is in a circle there is no leader and no follower. They are thus all equal, and the circle of Gnomes imparts peace and tranquility. When a surprise good thing happens to you, and you?re not sure as to why, you never know: It just might have been done by a Gnome (because you were a deserving person)."

Another new mold has just arrived in time for garden picnics! What a nice little center piece these would make for your garden table.  Interested? For more information contact QueenGnome@foundus.com - All ceramic pieces are available unpainted and finished. The two gnomes pictured here are about 3 inches tall and detached. They can be ordered with or without the accompanying scene.

Grandma?s Garden

25" h x 28" w x 1"d - $800

Machine and hand pieced, appliqué, embroidered and quilted. Hand beaded. Cotton, silk organdy, tulle, vintage paper flowers, Ultra Suede, Sulky threads, glass beads.

An estate sale find, the vintage German paper flowers, was the inspiration for this art quilt. My mind was flooded with memories of my German/Austrian heritage and my grandmother?s garden. A cool, quiet refuge, oblivious to the problems of the city around it. A place where time stood still, so your imagination could wander.

Just had to show off this beautiful beadwork.
Here is a link to Nancy Eha's site where you can learn lots about beadwork.
Is this not a beautiful beaded gnome piece!

Feature Artist, Jeff Doten

This is what Jeff wrote to me, "When I first did up the Gardening Gnome, I couldn't help but contrast him to the friendly ones fallen over in my neighbor's yard. I had a lot of fun with the flowers and color on this one. I can just imagine him yelling at visitors to, "Get out of the garden!""

Jeff also painted a female Gnome, wild in the forest and wrote, "I think of [her] as the Garden Gnome's daughter. He doesn't like her racing around out there like that, but can't do anything about it. In the future she will have her own garden. But it will be all wild flowers. Visit Jeff's web site at: www.jeffdoten.com to view his female gnome. If you like Jeff's paintings I am sure he would love to hear from members. You can email Jeff at dotenj@cadvision.com This picture is from "Bard's Legacy" a pre-internet roll playing game.

May's Crafty Ideas

There was a company that produced some wallpaper with gnomes on it from the Book Gnome Life illustrated by Rien Poortvliet. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. We researched this about six months ago.

But, here is one suggestion. Create a border, or a mural of gnomes with gnome picture cut outs. You will need to use good decoupage glue (available at local craft shops). This will make them waterproof and permanent OR you could use wallpaper glue which would make them semi-permanent. You can often pick up used gnome books from the on-line auction sites -
www.ebay.com is the best site for gnomes. Failing that go to the www.addall.com book site where I know you will be able to obtain gnome books. This method would cost you a lot less than purchasing actual wallpaper (if in fact you can locate any!) and a whole lot more fun and adventurous.

Best of all, you can do this as a joint project with someone special. Do take pictures along the way; create a memory album and present it as a gift.

Request for help:  Douglas Iredale is trying to locate a poem that his now deceased mother used to recite to him. If you know anything about this poem please respond to Doug by email at doug@e-doodah.net

It begins:
A naughty Gnome in Fairyland once found a pot of glue,
and all at once began to think  what mischief he could do.

It goes on to tell much more of course.

We must encourage artists to continue their work and keep gnome folklore alive with new and adventurous gnomes.

Update from Mamma Grim G105, to last month's article on Gnome folklore in Sweden relating to Goats and Pigs:  In your late newsletter I found some things about Sweden that were not quite right:

Tomte = a gnome
Tomten = the gnome
Tomtar = gnomes (plural)
Tomtarna = the gnomes (plural)

We do have snow in Sweden! Last Christmas all the country was white, from south to north. The last 10-15 years however, it?s a bit warmer but still snow every winter from about Stockholm to the north (Lappland).

It was nice to read about Jenny Nystr?known as the big Christmascard-painter in Sweden. Thanks to her we have  good pictures of Tomten. And a mix of gnomes and Santa Claus is JULTOMTEN that brings us X-presents on Christmas Eve.

Gnomes of Earth

At the dawning of the day
A precious Gnome was heard to say
Good morning Earth my home sweet home
For blessed I am to be a Gnome

To live upon this precious ground
Among flowers & trees love is found
The Sun to shine ever bright
Till dusk falls into the night

And sleep I must and dream again
Of brighter days & loving kin
So blessed be our Mother Earth
Upon you Gnomes are birthed

Home Gnomes

The Gnomes in my home,
Make me not want to roam.
I've traveled the globe,
But they've stayed home.
Their precious faces,
Reveal nameless graces.
No room-mate is needed,
When your Gnomes are well treated.

Greetings! ...My name is Professor Stone E. Mountain, but please call me Professor SEM.

I have agreed to teach you from "The Secret Book of Life" about stones and crystals, and the way of life that we Gnomes live.  You few humans have been selected by me personally because you show a deep interest, caring and concern for living creatures, and most importantly for the welfare of mother earth.  We fear that if we do not do something soon, this precious earth of ours will cease to exist, and all it's beauty will be lost forever, which is why we are entrusting you select humans with our secrets.

In my course, I will take you to many places, some far and some close. I will show  you where crystals and stones lay silent in the rich earth.  I will teach you their secret powers and usages.

So let's start our journey that will change your way of thinking forever.

Now close your eyes.  I will shower you with my magic and today you will gain knowledge of the emerald.  As you will open your eyes, look around.  You will see we are in Columbia, South America where some of the most precious emeralds are found.

Emeralds originally came to earth by way of the planet Venus, also known as the planet of "love".  On my podium is one of the most beautiful emeralds known to us Gnomes.  Observe this rich deep green gem.  Stare at it, can't you feel its power?

At birth, we are given an emerald by our maternal grandmothers.  We are taught  from the beginning to respect and understand its value.  The emerald is cherished by Gnomes because it gives us healing power, luck and good health. We, also believe the emerald gives us the power of eternal love.   The emerald assures us that we will fall deeply and forever in love, marrying for life.

In a Gnome's life, when its first announced there will be a new arrival, a huge celebration is given and during this party a special ritual will be performed with family members and close friends attending led by the maternal Grandmother.  In this ritual, the grandmother dedicates the selected emerald to the unborn infant and opens all its powers, assuring the infant will be blessed from it's first breath until its last.  Once gnomes have lived their entire lives and laid to rest, our emeralds are placed on our hearts where they stay for eternity.

To Gnomes, the emerald's green color also represents everlasting life and the season of spring when new life begins.  It  is also known to assist in acquiring higher intelligence, curing insomnia, gaining insight into prophecy, preventing eyesight loss, supernatural protection from evil ones, and enhances our lives with more compassion and understanding.

You can activate your own emerald's powers by following a simple procedure. First, you must dedicate a small peaceful area in your home either inside or out.  Play soft harmonic music and in the middle of this area kneel down, close your eyes, meditate on the powers you want your crystal to produce and be energized with.  It is that easy but remember, if you don't take care and respect your crystals they will lose their powers.

To us Gnomes, the emerald is the most priceless gem of all to own.  It starts with us at birth and is never out our possession even in passing.

I hope you have enjoyed this lecture and will continue to come and learn more.  If you have any questions you may write to me by way of my "master scribe" Lady Indigofae.  She will  make sure that I promptly answer all your questions.  It has been a real pleasure to be here with you.  Now if you will close your eyes so that I may once more spread my magic and return you to your homes.

Until next month may you always walk down the path luck.
