Birthday Greetings
Happy birthday to all WWGA Members born during the month of November!

Many gnomes are celebrating Feast Day today!
In Canada it is Thanksgiving.
In the United States they are celebrating Columbus Day.
Are you celebrating a special day today?

Many gnome families and friends are celebrating Feast Day. Gnomettes have been busy baking and the gnombies are all excited. They have a young spruce tree growing in a pot on which they have placed some items collected from their larders; acorns, cranberries and nuts. A special candle is lit and many of the gnombies are busy...just look at all the activity.

Blessings to all!
QueenGnome G7

Now for our lesson in Astrology, I present Madam Gemini and her companion Poo

Poo consults Madam Gemini, whom she calls GiGi
Madam GiGi and Poo discuss Sagittarius

Poo: GiGi, I know most gnomes have a happy nature because they are independent and thereby disinclined to worry and fritter over many things that would cause trouble and create problems. And I have heard that Piskeys are in many ways the opposite of gnomes in this respect. However, I have a Piskey friend that has a personality more like that of a gnome. Do you think it has something to do with my Piskey friend being born under the sign of Sagittarius?

GiGi: Why Poo you amaze me with your knowledge. You are certainly learning more about the signs of the Zodiac. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius are also often very carefree but adhere to honesty so I can imagine a Piskey born under this sign actually being considered very different to their "Piskey" relatives.

Poo: Yes, my Piskey friend is often misunderstood by other Piskeys because of his honest, straight forward approach. Most of his relatives lead prankish, but useful existences. They are however always exceedingly merry much like my gnome friends.

GiGi: It is precisely for this reason that they are ruled by Jupiter and their sign is that of the bowman - one who always aims for the highest standards. I must tell you about the gnome who challenged the Greek Gods Sagittarius .... and Jupiter ... to a match

Gnomes, Huts, and Treehouses - I came across this site which offers individually handcrafted (wooden) gnomes, huts and treehouses for miniature gnomes. They say that no two are exactly the same. The pictures on the site are very inspirational for all miniature enthusiasts! It will also interest members involved in creating gnome homes.

Teenage Pregnancy

Facts You Should Know About Teenage Pregnancy.
Teenage birth rates in this country have declined steadily since 1991. While this is good news, teen birth rates in the U.S. remain high, exceeding those in most developed countries. High teen birth rates are an important concern because teen mothers and their babies face increased risks to their health.

Nearly 13 percent of all U.S. births in 1997 were to teens (ages 15 to 19).
Almost 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year, and about 485,000 give birth.
The teenage birth rate is declining. Between 1991 and 1998, the rate fell by 18 percent (from 62.1 per 1,000 women to 51.1). Still, in 1998 (the most recent year for which data was available), about 5 teenage girls in 100 had a baby.
About one out of four teen mothers go on to have a second baby within two years after the birth of their first baby. Confidential Help line:  1-888-4-options  or website: http://www.thehelpline.org/      Teenage Pregnancy Fact Pages

Preparing for Winter Solstice

Strawberry Gnome.jpg (16326 bytes)
Here in the Northern Hemisphere gnomes are busy preparing for winter and their winter solstice celebrations (not to be confused with the Christian Christmas Celebrations which happen on December 25th).

The beginning of winter commences on the shortest day of the year, usually December 21st in the Northern Hemisphere which for centuries has been known as the Winter Solstice.

Gnomes are filling their family larders with winter supplies. Gnomettes and Nanas are busy mending blankets and weaving soft rabbit fur and woolen cloth which they use for blankets and clothing. They check their herb supplies and medical boxes in the event of an accident or illness. Grandpa is collecting lots of nettle for his pipe and carving a new table ornament. Gnombies are busy collecting, seeds and fallen leaves for their pet mice; and pine needles for the kinder box.

Forest gnomes go about making sure the hidden food niches of forest animals are well stocked; and keeping records of where animals, especially squirrels, store their supplies. Squirrels have a nack for forgetting where they stash their food provisions.

Barn gnomes are very busy too making sure farmers are aware of anything unusual happening to new crops of hay and grain. One method gnomes use is to push bales of hay, that have started to mold, right out of hay mows! They also help teach, and prepare, that year's newborn animals for the upcoming hardships of winter.

Mountain gnomes visit with forest animals collecting useful information to assist them in keeping the animals safe. They pay particular attention to the bears who hibernate during the winter. Female bears give birth to their young during this sleep time; fortunately gnomes consider it a very important duty to ensure that the babies know where to find nourishment. Each gnome has a territory to traverse and many dens to visit.

While gnomes residing in the Northern Hemisphere prepare for Winter, I wonder what our cousins in the Southern Hemisphere are busy doing?

Gnome Cuisine - Exotic Teas

Gnomes often have exotic teas prepared and stored in their larders.teapot gnomes.jpg (58591 bytes) Some are very strange looking indeed. Unlike our modern day tea bags gnome teas are steamed leaves rolled into tiny green balls then dried and stored. One ball produces a very large pot of tea for gnomes!

There is one tea consumed by humans that is made in the same manner called, FORMOSA GUNPOWDER GREEN TEA.  This is a 100% pure steamed green tea. It has surprising body and a captivating green tea taste similar to Jasmine. This gunpowder produces a nice green brew with a memorable fragrance and a long lasting finish. Legend has it that the name Gunpowder was given to it by a young English clerk who thought the tiny rolled green balls looked like gunpowder, but perhaps gnomes had a hand in its production. Gunpowder tea comes from the province of Zhejiang China and from Taiwan. Gunpowder teas are rolled into tight nuggets. Boiling water causes them to open up like flowers and sink slowly to the bottom in graceful patterns which add a dimension of visual pleasure to tea drinking. This tea can be used repeatedly – 3 times. If you want to try some of this exotic tea it can be ordered from Anne-Marie Leroux. Email:  sunsetgardens@hotmail.com (50 gram bag for $4.95 Canadian).

Gnome Health - Gnomes believe honey to be a good source of disease-fighting antioxidants. They choose the darkest-colored honey, such as buckwheat honey, because it tends to be the richest source of dietary antioxidants. Gnomes always use honey as sweetener in their exotic teas. Many teas are blended from plants high in vitamin C to keep away winter maladies and reduce stress. Tip:  Keep honey and exotic teas handy for those stressful days...but don't be surprised to find tracks of honey on your countertops...during times of shortage gnomes are known to visit human homes to obtain some of this liquid gold!

Sage is the symbol of “Wisdom” and “Immortality”.

Merry Meet my friends.  I hope this November newsletter finds you all in grand health.   I am so delighted to see so many of you interested in my love of herbs and plant life.  As you know, I am the Gnome Enchantress of plants, herbs and flowers.  I hope to bring, what you will consider, valuable information from the Gnomes “Secret Book of Life”.

My mother, her mother and the mothers before them have all been enchantresses with their expertise in herbs and plant life and I feel grateful to be a part of this lineage.  Gnomes learned, many ages ago, how essential plants are and now we have decided to open our  “Secret Book of Life” and share with you this information we consider so treasured.

So without further delay, let us begin and this month we are going to discuss Sage.

Fall photography ©1999-2002 by Glenna J. Morton, About's Interior Decorating Guide

This is an easy 10 minute project. Follow these simple instructions for a fast fall wreath that will last from September through November.
See our other wreath projects including this Raffia Wreath and Colorful Fall Wreath.

Materials Needed

  • Grapevine Wreath
  • Fall leaf garland (silk leaves)
  • Decorations or Floral picks
  • Raffia (or a Floral Bow)
  • 24 gauge wire
  • Hot glue gun (optional)

Attach garland
Lay garland on vine wreath. Attach garland to wreath with wire (or hot glue) at 6 inch intervals. If garland is too long, either cut off the excess or loop around the wreath twice.

Tip: Using wire to attach material will facilitate easy changes, while attaching items with hot glue will hold them more securely.

Fall photography ©1999-2002 by Glenna J. Morton, About's Interior Decorating Guide

Attach decorations
Arrange decorations (small birdhouse and scarecrow used here) and attach with wire or hot glue. Attach floral picks in the lower 1/3 of the wreath (4 picks shown at right). Tie several strands of raffia into a bow and attach to the bottom of the wreath.

Hang
Hang your wreath and enjoy the fall!

Tip: After determining the 'top' of your wreath you can attach a hanging loop (made from picture wire, strong twine, fishline, or a piece of coat hanger wire) to the back of the wreath.
