Paper Flowers

Choosing tissue paper in closely graded colors for these flowers achieves the vibrant,
glowing quality of real live peonies or roses. You can vary the diameter of your paper circles, with 7.5 cm/ 3 inches being about the smallest workable size.

All you need:

tissue paper in various colors
scissors
florists' wire
darning needle (optional)
green crepe paper

Cut circles of tissue paper.
Fold them into quarters and flute the edges using scissors.
Stack 4 or 6 circles of tissue paper together.
Bend a small loop in one end of a length of florist's wire.

Use a needle to make a hole in the center of the paper circles,
then thread the straight end of the wire through from front to back.

Turn the paper over and gently bunch the circles up around the wire loop.
And wind the wire around the base of the flower at the back to secure.
Gently ease the tissue paper into
attractive 'petal' shapes at the front.

Cut leaf shapes fro crepe paper in proportion to the flower heads.
Although crepe paper is stiffer than tissue,
do not make them too large, or they will flop.

Bend small loops at one end of lengths of florists' wire
and attach the leaves singly or in pairs.

Finally arrange the finished flowers and leaves in a bowl.

Folded paper garlands

These simple two-colored garlands
look like a compact pile of square folds
but open out into soft twists of color.

All you need:

Crepe paper (in two colors)
scissors
stapler

Cut strips of crepe paper about 7.8 cm/3inches wide in two different colors.

Hold the ends of the two strips at right angles and staple together.

Fold the lower (here yellow) strip squarely over the upper (pink here) strip.
Keep the fold steady with the fingers of your spare hand.

Now fold the lower (pink) strip over the upper (yellow) strip.
Continue folding each strip of paper over the other in turn,
making a neat square stack of folds.

When all the paper is used, staple the two colors together in the last fold.

When ready to hang the garland, lift one end and the folds will open out.

Napkin fan

Crisp, freshly laundered napkin is an essential part of a well set table.
Try out this simple art to make the setting look elegant.
Indeed this will impress your mother immensely.

All you need is a well ironed, starched fabric napkin.
Pick up any shade.
It may be tuned to mom's taste, or to your own,
but they need to be spotlessly clean.
And a napkin ring, or a ribbon.

Steps:

Fold up the edge nearest to you to meet the top edge.

Rotate the napkin so that the folded edge is on your right.
Make equal-sized accordion type pleats all the way up to the top of the napkin,
starting with the edge nearest to you.

Insert the napkin into the ring.
Or, tie with a ribbon or cord and spread out the pleats.
And place it at the center of the plate as shown.

Locket of love

It's so simple to look yet adds such a touch to elegance that your mom feels great.

Crafting:
Choose ribbons in pattern variations on your chosen color scheme.
Alternatively, use patterned and plain fabric, carefully cut into ribbon strips.

All you need:
plastic covered garden wire:
of 50-60 cm(20-24 inches) thick,
piece of florists' wire,
ribbon of two shades & varieties:
of about 7.5 m long & about 2.5 cm(1 inch) wide
and also
of length 0.5 meter & width of 5 cm/2 inches.
scissors,
needle,
thread

Steps:

1

Twist the thick wire into a heart shape
and bind the two ends together securely in the center with florist's wire.
Cut the narrower ribbon into approximately 15 cm/6 inches in length.

2

Double a length of ribbon and knot it over the wire.
Repeat with more ribbon knots until the wire is completely covered.

3

Fold a 20 cm/8 inches in length of wider ribbon
to make a bow loop and hold it together with a couple of stitches.

4

Loop the rest of the wider ribbon
around the middle of the bow loop and shape into a pair of tails.
Secure with a stitch or two.

5

Attach the bow at the center of the heart
to cover the florist's wire. Trim the ends of the ribbon into swallowtail shapes.

Bend the wire into a hook shape from where the swallowtail hangs.
Now fit it with a colored thread or string before placing it over your mom's neck.

Bring home the stars, moons for your mom

Add a sparkle to your mother's day celebration
with this this glittering extra terrestrial objects.

All you need:
Thin poster board
pencil
scissors
gold and silver spray paint
gold and silver glitter
plastic covered florists' wire
pliers
fishing line or similar nylon cord

Steps:

1

Draw four stars and five moons on the card.
It may be easier to make a template of the star
and moon shapes first and trace them onto the poster board.
Carefully cut out the shapes with a pair of sharp scissors.

2

To assemble the mobile,
cut two long pieces of wire of equal length
and two shorter pieces of wire of equal length.
Tie the shorter pieces of wire of equal length.
Tie the shorter lengths together with fishing line
or similar nylon cord where they meet in the center.
Curve the wires down to form an umbrella shape.

3

At the end of each wire,
use a pair of pliers to form a small loop.
Repeat with the shorter lengths of wire.
Suspend the smaller mobile from the center
of the larger using fishing line or similar cord.

4

Spray the stars with gold spray paint and moons with silver spray paints.
Make sure the surface you are working on is protected
and that the area is well ventilated.
Also take care so your eyes are protected.
And the spray is kept at a safe distance from your face.

When the spray paint has dried, cover one side of a star
with a thin layer of glue. Sprinkle a little gold color glitter onto a sheet of paper.
Then press the glued side of the star into the glitter.
Repeat the process for the other side.
Cover all the stars and moons with glitter in the same way.
Use the silver glitter for the moons.

Use a large needle to pierce a hole through one point of each star.
And the tip of each half moon shape.

Attach the shapes to the wires using short lengths
of nylon cord tied through the holes.
Attach a length of cord to the middle of the top of the wire
and hang the mobile in place.

Cut out place cards

Use patterned poster board for these attractive place cards.
Like special marbled, colored, gold or silver card is suitable.

All you need:

plain poster board,
patterned cord,
tracing paper,
craft knife,
pencil,
glue.

Steps:

Cut the poster board measuring about 20x10 cm(8 x 4 inches). Trace the pattern for the cut-out area onto tracing paper. Using a soft pencil, shade the area underneath the tracing.

Mark a fold across the center of the card and a 2.5 cm/1 inch fold at each end of the strip. Lightly score the folds with a craft knife. But do not cut through the poster board.
Lay the tracing shaded side down on the reverse of one half of the patterned card,
positioned centrally.
Using a sharp pencil, follow the line of the design.
On a hard surface, use the craft knife to cut out the shape. Then push the cut-out area from the right side of the card. Not from the back. Take care to push out any intricate designs carefully.

Cut out a strip of plain card measuring 9.5 x 7 cm (3-3/4 inches x 2-3/4 inches).
Stick the plain card behind the cut-out area on the patterned card with glue.
Write on it the name you like. And you've done it!
