Mix a touch of bohemian, a dash of fairy and a slight shade of gloom and what do you get? Wendy Kathleen McElfish. The Pisces from Southern California has morphed her sunny O.C. existence into a world of wonder, enchantment and mystery. From her earliest memories Wendy was drawn into the world of art and fairytales, gathering her skills and inspiration from her mother’s drawings and stories. Her mother would patiently guide and encourage Wendy’s work, while inspiring her imagination with stories. During high school, Wendy’s love and passion for art grew and took root. Her university years, Wendy refined and expanded her skills through classes and her own studies. Although she did not get a degree in art, she did receive a B.A. in English and M.A. in Education from Pepperdine University. Wendy now juggles her time between painting, running her numerous websites and teaching art. Wendy shares her free time with her husband and soul-mate Brian, her son Kaleb and two puppy dogs. For fun she can be found practicing yoga, ice skating, snowboarding and writing poetry. Wendy’s favorite medium is watercolor, to which she adds her own personal, ethereal touch not seen in traditional watercolors. Wendy chooses to focus her paintings almost exclusively on the main figure, with the background serving as a flow of light, billowing colors. Occasionally she will deviate from her trademark free flowing ethereal backgrounds, to a background wash in salt, with a touch of faerie dust. To invoke the muse, Wendy favors cold, gray, raining days and evenings by candle light. She loves to paint to the music of Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, Emilie Autumn, and various movie soundtracks. “Painting for me is a very spiritual experience. It is like breathing, for I require both for living. I wish for my art to bring beauty, reflection, mystery, contemplation and the feeling of the divine to people’s lives."
